We all hear about getting the work life balance
right in your life,  but what does that really
mean and do you ever achieve it? If you have
completed the life satisfaction assessment
and scored low in some areas it may be
because your life is not as balanced as it
could be.

Balance in anyone's life is a very individual
thing. It is based on your personal values,
principles and what your priorities are  at any
specific point in your life. That balance is not
fixed, it will change throughout your life as your
priorities change.

Balance is often described as a dance. You
will aim to maintain balance throughout your
life on a daily basis. Sometimes you will get it
right, other times you will veer off course.

The important thing is understanding what that balance is for you, right now. Learning to
understand what you truly value. What your real priorities are at present; being totally
honest with yourself.

All this can take time and a lot of personal exploration as well as staying aware of your
priorities and how you are spending your time. So what can you do to  improve your life
balance?
Want to change your life?
Need some help?
You can quickly assess how balanced your life is with this free life balance test but to
get a better, more balanced life follow the steps below.

Firstly, if you have not already, you need to work on setting your priorities. This is the
basis that you will use to work out if your life is balanced or not.

Once you have worked out your priorities spend some time considering how you
normally allocate your time over a week.

Try this now. Write down or just think about your most important priorities in your life
and for each one make a rough note of the percentage of your waking time that has
been devoted to it.

If you struggle to work this out or want a more accurate answer, consider creating a
time log and tracking your time for a week. A simple sheet with four columns showing
start and finish time, description and priority area addressed is all you need for this.
When your log is complete add up all the time spent for each area and consider it in
relation to the total hours available to you.

Now analyse where you have spent your time. Obviously some things are difficult to
control, you have to work to earn money to look after your family. However, perhaps the
spare time you have could be used more wisely? What spare time you may ask? I
challenge you to consider the timewasters in your life such as TV and the internet. Even
if you are extremely efficient with your time maybe you need to reconsider how you do
things or what you do.

Once you have a brief understanding of your work life balance you can consider how to
improve it through better time management, personal organisation skills or your life in
general.
